Quick History of Mexico...on Cinco de Mayo

Happy Cinco de Mayo !!!

200 BC-AD 900 Mexico's great urban civilizations are established including Olmec, Maya, Toltec and Aztec.

1325 Aztecs establish Tenochtitlan (Mexico City)

1492 Columbus lands in the Americas.

1521 Tenochtitlan falls to Hernando Cortes leading to 3 centuries of spanish rule.

1810 Fr. Miguel Hidalgo issues the famous Grito de Dolores (Cry of Pain) that led to the War of Independence from Spain.

1821 Independence from Spain is acheived.

1858 Mexican Civil War

1846-1848 The Mexican American War fought to settle the wish of what is now known as Texas to be annexed to the U.S. The war was settled by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ceding much of what is known as New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and parts of California, Colorado and Wyoming in lieu of $15 Million due to the U.S. for being "dragged into a war it had not sought"

Mexico deeply in debt suspended payment of foreign debt to Spain, England and France.

1861 Spanish, English and French troops land in Veracruz in an attempt to collect monies owed them. Spain and England withdraw upon seeing France become over zealous and having additional motives. The French march on to Mexico City.

Cinco de Mayo 1862 A 2000 man peasant Mexican "Army" under the direction of General Zaragoza taking orders from President Benito Juarez jolts a highly sophisticated, "modern" French army with the latest and greatest training and equipment. The victory at Puebla, in the state of Puebla, about 100 miles East of Mexico City was short lived, as France sent additional troops and eventually did conquer Mexico. Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the Bravery exhibited by the Mexican Peasant Army at the Battle of Puebla, not of Mexican Independence. That had already happened in 1821.

1863 Battle of Gettysburg

1864-1867 France rules Mexico under Maximillan.

1867 Maximillian is overthrown with the help of American Army under General Sheridan at the request of President Lincoln who had wanted to help earlier but couldn't because he was involved in the Civil War.

1910 Mexican Revolution

1968 Summer Olympics are held in Mexico City.
