Graduation Day

After 4 years of hard(?) work, my son, Alexander, and his 7 roommates all had graduated today. The graduation ceremony was held at the "The Big House", and the speaker for the commencement was Larry Page, Google co-founder and University of Michigan alumnus.

However, the most impression was made by George Dong who made remarks on behalf of graduating class. George arrived here from China with a minimum command in English, but after graduating from Michigan, he will be teaching English to children in Chicago. George’s speech was humorous, well delivered, and well received.

Most of all, Alexander and his 7 roommates will move on with their lives with aspiration of becoming lawyer, opera singer, engineer, physicist, human rights activist, and environmentalist.

For some of you who does not know what “The Big House” is, let me provide you with a short introduction.

“The Big House” is nickname for Michigan Stadium, the football stadium for the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Michigan Stadium has often been called "The Carnegie Hall of all Sports" . It was built in 1927, at a cost of $950,000 and had an original capacity of 72,000. Today, Michigan Stadium has an official capacity of 106,201, due to renovations for the 2008 season. The stadium previously had a capacity of 107,501 spectators. The football game attendance often exceeds 111,000 when band members, stadium staff, and others are added. The largest crowd in NCAA college football history was 112,118 on November 22, 2003 for a game against Ohio State.

Currently the stadium lists as the second largest in the United States, behind Penn State's Beaver Stadium, due to a reduction of 1,300 seats resulting from a lawsuit filed on behalf of disabled patrons. The former official capacity of 107,501 made The Big House the largest stadium in the United States up until the recent changes.

Currently “The Big House” is going through $230 million renovation which will result in addition of luxury boxes and 5200 seats. Upon completion of renovation, “The Big House” will regain the honor of being largest stadium in the United States.

As bid goodbye to April

On Wings of Song - Mendelssohn

Feauturing pianist Vladimir Horowiztz, this classic masterpiece is augmented with subscripts from Heinrich Heine, the poet who created the lyrics (1835) for its well-known operatic version. A host of paintings represented by Chagall, Homer, O'keefe, Pissarro, Sargent, and Spadecaller portray the beautiful night garden, where love is transported by the "Wings of Song."

Songbird - Fleetwood Mac’s Classic

Christy McVie is one of the hidden jewels of the music world. People who have never experienced her beauty both inside and outside are in for such a wonderful awakening if they should be so lucky to really hear her. Christy will always be one of My Favorite,

“Songbird” is one of the most heartfelt songs.

For you, there’ll be no more crying,
For you, the sun will be shining,
And I feel that when I’m with you,
Its alright, I know its right

To you, I’ll give the world
To you, I’ll never be cold
cause I feel that when I’m with you,
Its alright, I know its right.

And the songbirds are singing,
Like they know the score,
And I love you, I love you, I love you,
Like never before.

And I wish you all the love in the world,
But most of all, I wish it from myself.

And the songbirds keep singing,
Like they know the score,
And I love you, I love you, I love you,
Like never before, like never before.

I Dreamed a Dream

47 Year old Susan Boyle wows the judges with her performance in the auditions for Britains Got Talent, singing I dreamed a dream from Les Miserables.

Here are the Lyrics.

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving.

Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used
And wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung
No wine untasted.

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame.

And still
I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms
We cannot weather...

I had a dream my life would be
So different form this hell I'm living
so different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed
The dream I dreamed.

Ocean Gipsy - Annie Heslam

Beautiful voice, beautiful lyrics, beautiful song....Renaissance with Annie Haslam...fantastic assembly,...plenty of sensitivity and symbolism . I saw Annie Haslam sing this song in concert and loved it . Annie Haslam has a beautiful, pure, incredible, and unforgetable voice.

Ocean Gypsy - Renaissance

Tried to take it all away
And learn her freedom just inside a day
And find her soul
To find their fears allayed

Tried to make her love their own
They took her love they left her there
They gave her nothing back
That she would want to own

Gold and silver rings and stones
Dances slowly of the moon
No-one else can know
She stands alone

Sleeping dreams will reach for her
She cannot say the words they need
She knows she's alone
And she is free

Ocean gypsy of the moon
The sun has made a thousand nights
For you to hold
Ocean gypsy where are you
The shadows followed by the stars
Have turned to gold, turned to gold

Then she met a hollow soul
Filled him with her light
And was consoled she was the moon
And he, the sun was gold

Eyes were blinded with his light
The sun she gave
Reflected back the night
The moon was waning
Almost out of sight

Softly ocean gypsy calls
Silence holds the stars awhile
They smile sadly
For her where she falls

Just the time before the dawn
The sea is hushed
The ocean calls her
Day has taken her and now she's gone

Ocean gypsy of the moon
The sun has made a thousand nights
For you to hold
Ocean gypsy where are you
The shadows followed by the stars
Have turned to gold, turned to gold

No-one noticed when she died
Ocean gypsy shackled to the tide
The ebbing waves were turning
Spreading wide

Something gone within her eyes
Her fingers lifeless stroke the sand
Her battered soul was lost
She was abandoned

Silken threads like wings still shine
Winds take pleasure still make patterns
In her lovely hair
So dark and fine

Stands on high beneath the seas
Cries no more
Her tears have dried
Oceans weep for her the ocean sighs

Ocean gypsy of the moon
The sun has made a thousand nights
For you to hold
Ocean gypsy where are you
The shadows followed by the stars
Have turned to gold, turned to gold

John Mellencamp - "Little Pink Houses"

My son, Alexander, had made executive decision to attend the law school at Indiana University-Bloomington which had offered him the largest scholarship.

Attended law school open house this weekend, and had an opportunity to explore Bloomimgton.

Found out that when the Travel & Leisure Magazine mentioned that "Bloomington has the soul of a big city, but the heart of a much smaller town.”, they weren't kidding. Also found out that why IU-Bloomington is proud of having one of the most beautiful university campus in the country.

Bloomington is a small city of about 70,000 with cultural resources and opportunities that rival cities many times its size. You will find coffee houses, live music, festivals, bookstores, open-air markets, historic architecture, cafés, eclectic restaurants, boutiques, lakes, parks, museums, and, theatres through out Bloomington.

Bloomington’s rolling hills, limestone heritage, and picturesque scenery are a fitting backdrop for a city that is home to the state’s oldest and largest winery, the country’s only Tibetan cultural center, the legendary Little 500 bicycle race, and the annual Lotus World Music and Arts Festival.

John Mellencamp is from a rural town in Indiana and often writes about the American experience. His lyrics deal with the challenges of living in America as well as the triumphs, and visiting Blooomington made me think about this song. Realize that it fits perfectly with the slide Show!!! The United States is a beautiful place, with many attractions!!! Here you will see America's Landmarks, Cities, small towns, and everything else in between that makes up what the United States is today!!!! ENJOY!!!!!!
